About the credit union
About the credit union
In November 2018, members of the 11 Ontario caisses populaires and delegates of the Fédération des caisses populaires de l'Ontario overwhelmingly voted in favour of merging. Thank you to all the members who shared their views and took part in this important democratic process.
The new Desjardins Ontario Credit Union will officially open January 1, 2020. We'll continue to play an active role in community development primarily through our donation and sponsorship program and through our Community Development Fund.
The first caisses in Ontario
In 1910, Caisse Sainte-Famille was the first caisse populaire founded in Ontario by Alphonse Desjardins.
From 1910 to 1913, Alphonse Desjardins participated directly in founding 18 caisses in French Ontario. From May 1910 to April 1913, he helped found the first wave of 7 caisses in the heart of French-Canadian parishes, located mainly in Ottawa. In fall 1913, he visited northern Ontario, where he founded 11 new caisses in the Sudbury area in only 29 days.

Democratic life
As a member, you can have your say in your credit union's decisions by taking part in its democratic life.
At the annual general meeting, you'll be called upon by your credit union. You can participate in the various consultations about how to use the surplus earnings, among other things. You can also exercise your right to vote to adopt and change rules and elect the directors who'll sit on the board.
Every credit union member is also a co-owner.
