Balance transfers
Why transfer a credit card balance?
A balance transfer is a way to move your balance to a different card, which may or may not have a different interest rate (for example, from a 19.9% interest rate card to a 10.9% one). There are 2 main reasons for transferring a credit card balance.
To pay less interest and pay off your balance faster
When you transfer your balance to a lower interest card, you can pay it off faster since more of your money goes towards the principal. For the same payment amount, your balance will go down faster on a lower interest card.
To consolidate your payments
If you transfer all your credit card debt to a single card, you only have to make one monthly payment, not several. This makes it easier to manage your finances, with fewer risks of falling behind.

Minimum balance
You must transfer a balance of at least $50. You can transfer an amount up to the available credit limit on your Desjardins card.
Processing time
The transfer can take 5 to 7 business days.
Once I've requested the balance transfers, do I need to keep making payments on my other credit cards?
Yes. You must keep making payments on your other credit cards until the balance transfers are posted to your account statements or the cards are paid off in full. You are responsible for paying your balance on those cards before the statement due date. Under no circumstances can we be held liable for late payments to other banks or financial institutions.
Once the balance has been transferred, will the account be closed automatically?
No. We can't close your account at another bank or financial institution. To close your account, get in touch with the issuing bank or financial institution.
Are there administrative fees on balance transfers?
No. We don't charge administrative fees on balance transfers.
Can I transfer a balance from one of my Desjardins credit cards to another?
No. You can only transfer balances from credit cards issued by other banks or financial institutions to your Desjardins credit card. Transferring balances between Desjardins credit card accounts is not allowed.
If you have a Desjardins credit card, you can apply to switch to a low-rate card.
Credit limit
Why did I get notified (email or letter) that I've gone over my credit limit?
Since August 1, 2019, the Consumer Protection Actrequires that all cardholders be notified when a transaction on their credit card account has caused them to exceed their credit limit.
You can't opt out of these notices, which are required by law. To stop receiving them, pay off the excess amount and stay under your authorized credit limit.
How can I avoid going over my credit limit?
You can sign up to get an alert when you're approaching your limit, based on a trigger amount you set.
To set the alert, you need to log in to AccèsD using a web browser. This feature isn't available in the mobile app.
- Log in to AccèsD.
- In the right-hand menu, select Profile and preferences.
- Under Alert service, select Alert service.
