Poverty in Quebec still exists

March 8, 2017
François Dupuis, Vice-President and Chief Economist • Joëlle Noreau, Senior Economist

Those engaged in combating poverty know very well that a single solution does not exist, nor is poverty single faceted. People living in poverty are acutely aware of this. Quebec has developed new weapons since the start of the 2000s, such as the Act to combat poverty and social exclusion, to create a better framework to fight poverty. That said, the number of low-income people remains high and the needs are tremendous. What’s more, the solutions have to be adapted given the ever-changing labour market and economic environment. What is clear is this: the fight against poverty is an ongoing battle, and one that concerns us all.
