FAQ

Is insurance required for all mopeds?

Quebec law requires you to register your bike and have civil liability insurance if its engine has a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cubic centimetres. If your engine capacity is 50 cubic centimetres or less, insurance is not mandatory but is strongly recommended. It will protect you financially in the event of a covered accident or loss.

If I carry passengers on my motorcycle, are they covered by my insurance?

No. In Quebec, drivers or passengers who are injured or lose their life in motorcycle accidents are covered by the SAAQ.

How can I save on my motorcycle insurance?

Here are 4 tips to get the best rates for motorcycle insurance:

  • Choose a higher deductible if you're able to pay more out of pocket in the event of a claim.
  • Insure more than one vehicle with us to get our multi-vehicle discount.1
  • Consider skipping coverage that protects your motorcycle if your motorcycle's value is lower than the combined amount of your deductible and premium.
  • Compare quotes for different models when shopping for a motorcycle. Certain types, like high-performance and sport bikes, are more expensive to insure.

How do I make a motorcycle insurance claim?

If your motorcycle was damaged, stolen or involved in an accident, you can file a claim online, in the Desjardins Insurance Home-Auto app or by phone. We're here to help 24/7.

What if I store my motorcycle for the winter?

You don't need to notify us when you put your motorcycle in storage at the end of the season. When we calculate your premium, we assume that you only use your bike seasonally. To ensure your bike stays well protected year-round, we recommend that you don't cancel your policy for the winter. For example, if your policy includes protection against fire, theft and vandalism, your bike will stay covered even if it's parked in a garage during the off-season.

You can, however, get a partial refund of your registration fees if you submit a vehicle storage request on the SAAQ website by September 30. l link.
