When you're there: Have all the resources you need on hand

Your Desjardins Access Card is one of the best ways to get cash abroad because it gives you access to thousands of ATMs on every continent.

Types of ATMs

Interac network ATMs

Interac network ATMs

In all Canadian provinces, Desjardins Access Cards are accepted across Canada wherever you see the Interac symbol. Network access fees of $1.50 apply, and ATM owners may also charge additional service fees.

  • Daily maximum:
    • $300 if the ATM withdrawal limit allocated to your folio is C$1,000 or less.
    • If the limit allocated to your folio is more than $1,000, then that limit applies as the daily maximum.

The ATM withdrawal limit allocated by default to your folio is usually C$1,000 per day. Your caisse can change this amount, which can be anywhere between $0 and $2,5001.

  • Maximum per withdrawal: C$1000 or the limit of the ATM used, whichever is lower.

PLUS network ATMs

PLUS network ATMs*

Outside of Canada, you can withdraw local currency at any ATM that carries the PLUS symbol. The exchange rate for that day will be applied, plus a $3.00 fee per withdrawal in North America and a $5.00 fee per withdrawal elsewhere. However, the ATM owner may charge an additional service fee.

  • Daily maximum: The limit allocated to your folio is usually $1,000 per day. Your caisse can change this amount, which can be anywhere between $0 and $2,5001.
  • Maximum per transaction: C$1,000 or the limit of the ATM used, whichever is lower.

NYCE network retailers

In the U.S., another way to obtain cash is to withdraw cash when you make a purchase (when available) at any one of 2 million NYCE retailers. There are no network access fees. Note that not all merchants offer their customers the option of making a withdrawal when making a purchase and that many set a withdrawal limit.

Cash advances on your Visa card

By putting a PIN (personal identification number) on your Visa Desjardins card, you can get cash advances at any Visa International, PLUS or Interac ATM worldwide.

Use the ATM Locator2 on the Visa website to find the location of ATMs on your itinerary.

1. Limits applicable to ATMs can be subject to review by your caisse, to be increased or decreased, according to your activities or your needs.

2. Warning: Due to frequent changes, PLUS network ATM locator information may not be up to date. Therefore, it is important that you check that the information you have is still correct before you leave for your trip abroad and plan for an alternate payment option (traveller's cheques or other) in the event of a problem.

Despite all your careful planning, it's possible that you might, for some reason, need to reach your caisse, a company or an individual in Canada.

Online

The Internet is an excellent way to get information at little or no cost when you're outside the country. Not all countries, however, have the necessary infrastructure in place to let you view and pay bills online.

Before you leave, get an e-mail address that's easily accessible from a distance with a company like Hotmail or Yahoo. This way you'll be able to write to us and retrieve the response from anywhere in the world.

By phone

From Canada or the U.S. you can reach us toll-free at 1 800 CAISSES (1 800 224-7737).

From any other country, first reach a Canadian operator and then dial the number of our caisse. Be sure to ask the operator about the long-distance charges that apply to the area you're calling from. Be careful, as these can sometimes be as high as several dollars per minute.

To reach our automated telephone service from outside North America, dial the prefix for Canada, followed by 514-CAISSES (514-224-7737).

By fax

A fax can be an excellent way to communicate details that are difficult to explain over the phone.
